For more than two decades, the Red Earth Festival has grown to be one of the world’s leading Native American cultural events. Nearly 30,000 visitors and 4,000 participants from around the world travel to Oklahoma City each year to enjoy the many events held during the festival. This year, the 24th Annual Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival will be held at the Cox Convention Center Friday June 18-20, 2010 in downtown Oklahoma City. More than 1,200 American Indian artists and dancers from throughout North America are expected to participate in this celebration of diversity of their heritage.
Kicking things off on Friday morning, the streets of downtown Oklahoma City will be flooded with Native American tribal spirit, as more than 100 tribes will be represented in full tribal regalia. Then, guests can enjoy some of the nation’s most celebrated artists, with opportunities to purchase contemporary and traditional examples of beadwork, basketry, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, paintings, graphics and cultural attire during the art show and market. There will also be a dance competition—competitors will represent the elite of Native American dance. Each in their own distinctive tribal dress will exhibit their originality and skills in one of the most prestigious of all native dance competitions.
One of the most highly anticipated events at the 24th annual Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival will be the 2010 Red Earth Festival Run, set for June 19. Nearly 500 runners are expected to participate in a 5K at Regatta Park and River Trails along the Oklahoma River in downtown Oklahoma City. The race will be open to participants of all ages, registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m.—fees are $25 for adults and $20 for students. Pre-registration is available for $20 and $15 for adults and students. Registration is available online.
In addition to the 5K Run there will also be a 2K walk—allowing athletes from beginning to advanced fitness levels to participate in this great event. The race starts at the Chesapeake Boathouse, 725 South Lincoln Blvd., just south of I-40 and Bass Pro Shop and continues along the northern shores of the Oklahoma River. Race registration includes a t-shirt, a commemorative medal and a complimentary admission ticket to the festival. The Red Earth Run is sanctioned by the USA Track and Field Association and offers electronic chip timing for runners.
All of the proceeds of the 2010 Red Earth Festival and Run will support the Red Earth, Inc. mission to promote the rich traditions of American Indian art and culture through education, a premier festival, a museum and fine art markets. Tickets to the festival can be purchased online.
